Senator Smith Leads Effort to Restore Birchdale Zip Code

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), announced she had secured changes from the U.S. Postal Service to address concerns from residents of Birchdale, Minnesota after a recent change to their zip code.

Birchdale residents raised concerns about delayed and missing mail following a zip code change from 56629 to the Baudette, MN zip code of 56623. Thanks to Smith, USPS will now allow residents in Birchdale who live in the Baudette zip code to use either city and zip code as their mailing address.

“Making Minnesotans’ lives better is the best part of being a Senator,” said Smith. “Being in public office means solving problems for your constituents and being available to help the people you serve. Communities like Birchdale are critical to our state, and the Postal Service should not be unfairly erasing them from the map.  We should celebrate every Minnesota community and ensure they all have access to reliable mail delivery. I’m proud of our work to help solve this problem for the residents in Birchdale.”

After the Birchdale zip code was changed, constituents reached out to Senator Smith’s office reporting unreliable or missing mail. Some even reported that it has caused issues with their credit scores due to returned mail that required a timely response.  After coordination from Senator Smith’s office and the USPS, residents will now be able to use either Birchdale or Baudette and their corresponding zip code.
