Internships in St. Paul, MN

 

This internship is a great opportunity for college students or recent graduates interested in learning how an elected official’s office serves its constituents. Interns will be selected based on the quality of their application and demonstrated commitment to public service. Sen. Smith accepts all applications for internships; however Minnesotans will be given preference. All internships are unpaid. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities include; but are not limited to:

  • Answer phones and record constituent concerns
  • Assist constituent and outreach staff with casework and related tasks
  • Assist outreach staff with research, event planning and other work
  • Attend meetings with outreach staff
  • Assist scheduling and communications staff
  • Other assigned tasks based on the needs of the staff and office

Internships in Washington, DC

Similar to the St. Paul Office, interns in DC will be paired with a legislative assistant who matches their issue are of interest, and will assist this staffer with policy research, as well attend committee hearings and other Senate events. Interns will be an integral part of keeping the office functional by assisting with constituent mail process and managing the front desk.

Applications must be received by the deadline, depending on which term you are applying for.

  • Fall Internship – July 15                  (min. of 12 hrs/week)
  • Spring Internship – November 15 (min. of 12 hrs/week)
  • Summer Internship – March 20        (min. three full days or five partial days/week.)
